So you want a "brown bag." But kind of brown specifically?

We get a lot of collectors who come to us looking for a "brown bag." But that's not an easy question to answer. Why?

Not all browns are created equal.

From left to right, we have: taupe brown; light brown; and dark brown.

So next time you look for a "brown bag" - make sure you specify the shade.

Here's a helpful guide to the type of language retailers typically use when describing the different shades of brown:

  • Chocolate brown: A deep, rich brown with a slightly warm undertone. This is one of the most recognizable vintage Chanel browns and shows up in collector listings and discussion.

  • Espresso / dark brown: Very deep brown, often close to black in low light. Vintage pieces in this range can look especially formal and understated.

  • Cognac / caramel brown: A lighter, warmer brown with amber or honey notes. It reads more golden and often looks softer than chocolate brown.

  • Tobacco / taupe-brown: A muted brown with a drier, earthier cast. This is less “sweet” looking than caramel and often feels more neutral.

  • Faded or aged brown: Some vintage black bags can fade or oxidize into brownish tones over time, which can make the color look distressed rather than intentionally dyed.

Happy collecting!
